Stage 1 - Detox & Assessment
On arrival our medical team examines each patient in order to ensure
that the most appropriate detoxification regime is prescribed.
This
covers all mood-altering chemicals including
opiates, alcohol, stimulants including crack cocaine and various designer
drugs. General health levels are observed simultaneously to ensure
patients are in no immediate physical danger.
The comfort of our patients is paramount and medication to help ease
withdrawal is normally necessary.
Detoxification usually takes a maximum of two weeks.
During the course
of this, a focal counsellor will be allocated
to the case who together with the medical team and patient prepare
an initial assessment of the latter’s particular needs, psychological state and circumstances.
An on-going care plan is mounted on this basis.
Light involvement in the daily group therapy sessions is initiated
and the concept of acceptance (Step 1 of the Twelve Step Programme)
is addressed.
The Perry Clayman Clinic’s philosophy is that addiction is an illness.
After completing detoxification, the patient is then introduced to Stage
2 of the treatment.
Stage 1 – Denial: confronting denial in order to help
recognize and accept addiction.
Stage 2 – Hope: recognizing ability to change and the 12
steps as the vehicle for change.
Stage 3 – Trust: commitment to change.
Stage 4 – Review: reflecting on past behaviour and
acknowledging an ability to lead a life of abstinence.
