Smart Pills - Cognitive Enhancers
In a desperate measure to improve work performance and pass examinations with flying colours, next generation students and business tycoons will resort to a new genre of mind-bogglingly mind-altering drugs, reveals a joint study conducted by Government think-tank, Foresight and Academy Of Medical Sciences.
According to Foresight, the UK Government's programme that uses scientific methods to provide visions of the future, “cognitive enhancers” will become as abundant and mundane as coffee in the next two decades, helping people to de-stress, think clearly and perform better in their work-places.
The British Health Department has expressed its concern over the long-term impact of such drugs, some of which are licensed in Britain to cure narcolepsy or acute lethargy. The health authorities have requested AMS to review the potential impact of intelligent pills on common people, indicating that their random use may be ethically debatable.
AMS that promotes advances in medical science and campaigns in the UK, in course of the study, conducted a string of workshops in relation to “cognitive enhancers” to have a better idea of public views. In most cases, people were unaware of the potential health damages posed by the so called “magic” pills.
The Foresight campaigners have revealed that some of these illegal drugs can be purchased online in the USA.
Looking at the effects of modafinil, a drug available in Britain to treat people who fall asleep unwillingly, researchers at Cambridge University have recently discovered that it dramatically boosts performance.
The report issued by the study states, “The ethical debate about whether or not to use drugs to improve performance in normal schoolchildren and students will probably be resolved over the next 20 years.”
It also talks about a possibility of children undergoing medical tests before they write an examination so that they do not beat others with the aid of smart pills.
Researchers of the study are suspecting that the pharmaceutical industry will possibly shift their focus from medicines that treat mental diseases to cognitive enhancers.
Nick Hillier, an AMS spokesman, says: “We are looking at how these drugs will potentially impact on our society.”
According to Foresight, drugs called the beta blockers can help people forget past unhappy and painful situations in their lives.
