Recreational Drugs - GHB
Gammahydroxybutrate (GHB) is a highly dangerous drug with anaesthetic and sedative effects and was originally intended for use during surgery. It is usually sold as an odourless, colourless, salty tasting liquid and comes in small bottles or capsules. Because the strength of GHB varies, it can be hard to tell how much you are taking. Consequently, there is no way of knowing whether a dose will give you an enjoyable buzz or be one that could kill you.
The effects of GHB normally kick in within 10 minutes to an hour and generally last for seven hours, although the effects have been know to continue for a whole day. A small capful can induce euphoria, lower inhibitions, and increase sociability. If a larger dose is taken, it can have a sedative effect which can cause drowsiness.
There has been little research into the addictive potential of GHB. However, there is evidence to suggest that someone using GHB regularly may have withdrawal symptoms if use is suddenly stopped. It is also not yet certain whether or not using the drug can result in psychological dependence.
There are many risks associated with taking GHB. Higher doses can cause nausea, vomiting and confusion. It can also cause muscles to go numb or begin to spasm which can sometimes lead to convulsions. Concentrations of the drug can vary widely. Therefore, it is hard to tell the difference between a dose that will get you high and one that can result in unconsciousness, coma, respiratory problems and subsequently, death. It is advisable then to take only very small amounts at any one time in order to decrease such risks.
If you suffer from asthma, respiratory problems, or low blood pressure the risks are increased further. GHB can also be fatal if mixed with alcohol or other drugs, particularly other sedative or depressant drugs. Often made in underground laboratories, the chemicals in GHB may be incorrectly mixed and so can badly burn the mouth. Because of its sedative effects, GHB has been linked to drug assisted sexual assault. It is practically tasteless, and so easy to slip into someone’ drink undetected.
