Gambling Problem UK
Gambling addiction can destroy a person’s life just as easily as an addiction to drugs or alcohol. While for most, gambling is nothing more than an enjoyable pastime, for a minority it can get out of hand as they are drawn into the illusion of the ‘big win’. In reality however, the house always wins.
It has been suggested that some forms of gambling are more dangerous than others, and that this in turn leads to more problem gambling. For example, playing bingo or the lottery is considered soft gambling. Practically everyone in the UK has played the lottery on a Saturday night. Casinos and betting shops on the other hand are more likely to be frequented by problem gamblers due to the possibility of big money stakes. Slot machines in bars or online gambling can be particularly appealing due to their convenience. Online gambling has become increasingly popular in recent years, not least because of its lack of restrictions. A gambler can play and bet around the clock from the comfort of home.
The severity of any gambling addiction will vary from person to person. In general, those with a gambling problem will preoccupied with gambling, even if they should be focused on other things such as work or family commitments. They will spend more money than they can afford, and when they loose money, will gamble more to win back their losses. Often, someone will gamble to in order to escape problems in their life. They may lie to friends and family as to the extent of their gambling. Although many people realise they have a problem, the desire to stop is often not enough.
The impact of gambling can be far reaching. It can lead to the loss of friends, divorce and family breakdown. Many gamblers end up in debt and will sometimes turn to friends and family for financial assistance. They in turn can become overburdened by constant requests for money. A problem gambler may resort to illegal acts like theft in order to get hold of gambling money. Some, who have perhaps lost love ones or owe large amounts of money, may even contemplate suicide.
