Drugs and Teenagers

Most parents worry about their children taking drugs. It is worth remembering, however, that the majority of teenagers who experiment with drugs do not go on to become regular users. Research suggests that nearly a third of fifteen year olds have tried at least one illegal drug, typically cannabis.

Those who do try drugs, do so for a variety of reasons. Many teens take drugs simply to look cool in front of their friends, others out of curiosity, while for some it is a right of passage from adolescence to adulthood. Also, those who smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol from a young age are more likely to take drugs later on.

Soft drugs like cannabis are often referred to as ‘gateway drugs’, suggesting that their use leads to hard drugs. While this is not the case for the majority of teenagers, some are at greater risk of developing a drug problem. Contributing factors include having a family history of drug abuse, death or divorce in the family, poor school performance, and depression.

Recognizing the warning signs of drug abuse can be hard for parents. Some to look out for are: changes in sleeping patterns; fatigue; sudden mood changes; lack of interest in normal life; violent outbursts; secretiveness; problems at school; criminal behaviour; and a lack of personal hygiene. If not caught in time, these problems can continue into the long-term, resulting in drug addiction, failure in school, or even a criminal record.

Early education on the dangers of drugs can go a long way in preventing your child from experimenting with drugs. As can setting a good example to your children. Children are far more likely to take up smoking, for example, if one or both parents smoke. Keeping the channels of communication open for your child is of utmost importance. Teenagers, more often than not, do want to ask their parents for advice but feel unable to approach them.

If you suspect your child is using drugs, it is important to intervene early. It is often prudent however to seek help and advice for yourself before confronting your child.
