Cocaine Addiction Warning Signs

Cocaine is a drug that prevents the brain from absorbing a hormone called dopamine. Consequently there is a surplus amount in the brain while taking cocaine. Dopamine gives users a feeling of happiness and results in a rise in blood pressure, heart rate and mental activity. These sensations last for approximately 30 minutes and can leave the individual feeling depressed and irritable once the drug has depleted. Users may feel compelled to take more cocaine to achieve the same feelings.

Persistent use of cocaine changes the brain’s chemistry. The brain reduces the amount of dopamine present because of the surplus produced when cocaine is taken. This leads to a deficiency of dopamine and the user can feel anxious and panicked. Consequently the individual craves more of the substance and can become stuck in a cycle. Furthermore the longer a person uses the more resistant the brain becomes to the drug and the more they need.

Family members may notice the warning signals of someone caught in the cycle of using cocaine. The user may be depressed, irritable, have lost their appetite and seem paranoid. Immediately after taking the drug they may appear extremely confident, excitable, and positive.

A cocaine user’s relationships and work life may suffer as the individual becomes addicted. As well as mood changes a user can suffer physical damage. They could increase their risk of heart disease, seizures, strokes and coma. Rarely does cocaine use result in immediate death though it is possible.

There are legal implications for carrying and using Cocaine. It is designated as a Class A drug and could result in a seven year prison sentence and a fine.

Those concerned about their family members or friends’ cocaine use can get in touch with their GP or voluntary and private organisations that can provide advice. The GP can provide information on the treatments available such as medications for withdrawal, residential placements and the assigning of a key worker for the user. The key worker can help put together a treatment plan specially tailored for the individual. A similar service is offered by private centres and voluntary groups.
